Centennials Chaplaincy

Monday nights · Twenty years running

Junior hockey brings young men to Merritt from all over. Most are sixteen to twenty, living away from home for the first time, billeted with families they had never met in September. It is a good life and a hard one.

Every Monday night the team comes to the church. Some of it is worship and encouragement. A lot of it is floor hockey, dodgeball and food. All of it is about these guys knowing there are people here who are for them, whatever the season is doing.

Twenty years of Monday nights is not a program. It is a habit of showing up.

Dave has been chaplain to the Centennials for more than two decades, through winning seasons and hard ones. He runs the Monday team-building nights, coordinates the volunteers who help, and has emceed year-end award nights. His wife Carol organizes, and along with other volunteers, supply the snack, which the guys will tell you is not a small part of it.

The Centennials play out of the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. Schedule, roster and tickets are on the club’s own site.

Want to help?

Monday nights run on volunteers. Setting up, cooking, baking, playing floor hockey badly, or just being another adult in the room who knows the players’ names. Billet families are always needed too, and that goes through the club.
